2pm to Approx. 6pm: Zong Ying's House

Instructions for Logistics IC: Buy snacks, drinks and other stuff, get the receipt and claim from Yi Tyan
Instructions for Games IC: Bring the necessary stuff for ECP like balls, cubes etc
General Instructions: Do not wear jeans. Wear loose clothing and bring change if you think you will get dirty

Since Mr Lee said Honorary members of 6K will come on their own, so I assume he does not object to you all inviting them? (I take no responsibility if he does mind... do exercise discrestion)

Japan teen in historic Rubik win

It was the 25th anniversary of the first Rubik's world championships

A Japanese teenager has won the Rubik's Cube World Championships in Hungary's capital, Budapest, taking less than 13 seconds to finish the cult '80s puzzle.

Yu Nakajima, 16, took home 5,000 euros (£3,400, $7,000) after winning the main event of the three-day tournament.

Nearly 300 contenders from 33 countries tried their hands - and feet - at the puzzle, some completing it blindfolded.

Hungarian architect Erno Rubik invented the cube in Hungary in 1974. More than 300 million cubes have been sold since.

Nakajima solved the classic 3x3 version of the six-coloured cube - which has nine squares on each side - with an average time of 12.46 seconds in five attempts.

Following the success of the cube - which is said to have 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible configurations - Mr Rubik invented several other mechanical puzzles, including Rubik's Magic, Rubik's Clock and Rubik's Snake.

Hello from UK. I am basically here to upload some photos and to show that we are all living well. The lodging is not bad, so is the food here. But due to too much western food, too little water (because some people claim the boiled water taste of iron, not sure how true because I am drinking mineral water) and the drastic drop in temperature at night, several of us are starting to develop colds and sore throats. Also, we have 3 injured people, 2 sprained their ankles and 1 had her thumb caught by the door of some museum. Other than that, all of us are well and yeah we are all still in 1 piece. Ok, now to spam some photos (taken using Yi Tyan's old camera and lerong's camera)

Hey people, this is post number 97 and your class aviation freak is here again. Now ever wondered what will happen should something go seriously wrong during the takeoff roll? The simplest solution is to close the throttles and apply the brakes HARD! But this doesn't always work. You got to have enough runway to stop of course, so the V1 (pronounced: Vee One) speed comes in. Anytime before that speed is reached, we can safely stop on the runway, anything after that, we would have to takeoff and deal with it long enough to circle back and land.

So how strong does the brakes have to be, to stop the plane charging down the runway trying to takeoff? Here Boeing tests their new Boeing 777. The aircraft is at maximum takeoff weight, and the brakes have been worn down to the minimum thickness, so this is really the most severe situation any pilot would run into. See how the landing gear is able to contain the heat generated by the braking to meet the requirements.

So, no need to panic if something goes wrong during the initial part of the takeoff roll, the gear is strong enough to take care of you. Enjoy your flights for those returning home and coming back.

Plane Stuff Again

After having a short discussion with Mr Lee about aircraft pressurisation while in flight, I think it would be nice to illustrate the point further. Each plane flies at an average of 33 thousand feet, that's about 10km upwards, sometimes more. But the air pressure up there isn't high enough to ensure we get enough oxygen, so the cabin is pressurised to 10 thousand feet, and that is known as the safe altitude. Should anything go wrong with the pressurisation, the pilots descend to that level at 6000+ feet per minute, while oxygen masks supply everyone with 15 mins of emergency 100% pure oxygen, more than enough for the plane to get down. This difference in pressure inside and outside the plane places some stress on the aircraft fuselage. So below is a video, on how much damage a tiny fracture can cause. This is a true incident, and the video is a segment of Air Crash Investigation by National Geographic. Those who have a fear of flying, or think they may get nightmares, or develop a fear of flying after watching are strongly adviced NOT to watch the video. I will not be responsible for counselling you, so watch at your own discretion.

Note that near the ending, after the pilots have landed, the way the co-pilot activates the reverse thrust (a whoosh you hear after a plane touches down, formed by directing engine thrust forward to help slow the plane down) is not accurately depicted. You see the co-pilot using the reverser handles to pull the throttles back to idle and the reverser engages as these levers come up. This is not true for an airliner. Firstly, the reverser handles are locked unless the throttles are on idle. Secondly, thrust is reduced to idle latest when the main gear touches down, and reverse thrust is not activated until the nose gear touches down. So what you should have seen is the throttles already at idle, and the co-pilot pulling the reverser handles upwards to engage reverse thrust.

Next is another video from the same series, this one is something most people don't know about. An airplane has a built in automated survival system, which will keep the airplane in the air, should an upset occur. Find out what it is at the end of this next video. What the pilots have to do can be quite surprising. Also, the first part of this video is quite scary for those who do not like disaster documentaries, so once again, watch only if you dare to.

This is a long flight, so there is a relief crew, thus you see that there is another captain onboard. Anyway, according to current rules, no one is allowed into the cockpit unless they are part of the flight crew, cabin crew serving the flight deck, or riding in the jump seat/instructor seat. The doors are locked and a safety code is need to open it. This is an accident known as CFIT or Controlled Flight Into Terrain, since the plane is perfectly functional, and the crew, having made several severe mistakes, flew the plane into the mountains. The autopilot shutting down is due to the high stress and unusual flight profile, which is out of the envelope of the controls of the AP. Anyway, the angle of tilt or bank you see on the video is made larger. To experience a G force of twice your weight, the aircraft only needs to be 60 degrees away from the horizontal, which is already excessive. You can try proving that using vectors. At the 90 degrees shown, the G forces increases so sharply and the rate of lift loss is so great, the nose will almost certainly plunge downwards immediately.

Anyway, looking all these, you may start to worry about the safety of flying, especially those who have to fly home every year. Actually, you are more likely to get into problems on your way to the airport (ie on the road) than on the plane itself. If you seriously have doubts you want to clarify, you can look for me, and I will try to explain it to you as best as I can.

I heard Mr Lee insists that we post on the class blog, so here is my little story, which includes both fact and fiction. You can choose to believe it or not. It is not very exciting, and has some technical terms, so do be prepared. But I guess this still counts as a post.
Flight CO3004 took off early as Combined Sports Meet ended earlier than expected, in fact much earlier than expected, so the runway was clear, and all the passengers/crew were all available for the flight. The tower cleared the flight for its rehearsal of the route it would do during SYF on 10th May. The front part of the flight was routine, as each section of the jet rehearsed what it was going to do independently, with the exception of the guanyue section, as they were connected to the flight deck and the chief cabin crew members. XYZ (Xianyue Zu aka bowed strings section) and Tanbo (aka plucked strings) sections were operating in other parts of the jet. Lunch was served at 11.30am, but it took some time for all the people onboard to get back to their stations, so the next phase of the rehearsal was delayed.
Not long into the 2nd phase of the flight rehearsal, the pilot in command (PIC), Yong Lin notices the lights in the flight deck and the cabin behind him going off all together. Immediately, alarms began sounding, and the autopilot disconnected. Checking the announciator panel, our PIC noticed several red warning, requiring immediate crew attention. The jet suffered an AC generator failure, both AC buses were down. Somehow, the generators in the 4 jet engines were not feeding power to the buses and now the jet is running on its batteries. Because of this, the electrically driven hydraulics could not exert their full strength on battery power and not receiving full control of the flight surfaces, the AP disconnected. As the aircraft was trimmed for level flight, there was no major upset of the flight path. The PIC immediately went for the circuit breakers and found his flight engineer T*-A** struggling with the breakers. Guanyue was feeling too cold but didn't know that the air conditioning packs are controlled in the flight deck. Being a member of Guanyue, the T*-A** wanted to help her section mates, and tried to shut off one of air conditioning pack from the breaker panel. Unfortunately, she shut off the Main Current Circuit Breaker, cutting off the power to all the aircraft's systems, leaving the batteries to keep them up and running in a reduced state. As the main breakers must carry high currents, the spring in them are tight, and T*-A** was unable to reset the breaker. With the help of the PIC, AC power was restored and after a few moments of reconfiguration, all systems were back in their original state and the flight continued without trouble.
Flight CO3004 landed safely at 1930 hours. So back to the real world, Mr Lee is currently a couple of hours from home. UA895 is scheduled to land in Singapore at 2330 hours. There are currently no status updates on the flight, so we assume that it is cruising smoothly and happily. Hope you enjoyed this post full of aviation.

Today mostly lesson all the way...which was enriching. The highlight was definitely the weather...cos it was a cloudless day...and i can't help but to get out as much as possible to enjoy the warm weather.

It was FREEZING cold when i woke up...and not surprising, a layer of snow covered everywhere...even the trees.

Today was the first day for the Green Chemistry course...and it's great! Shan't reveal too much what went on...but when it was time for lunch...the temp rose so much that all the snow on the trees and on the ground had all melted by then!

The temp + intensity of the sun made it really nice to hang out in the open..so much so that we (the three teachers) walked back from our conference centre to the hotel (which was about 20 mins walk).

The 2 hour car journey from Denver to Keystone was stunning..the snow covered hills was littered all over the scenary and there were many houses that were built on top of the hills and at some part of me really wanna live in it...it was just so quaint!

Keystone is a ski resort and the ski slopes are still covered with snow even though the official skiing season is over. The weather started off clear and sunny...but in the later part of the day...there was a short but intense snow shower..and this made the whole place so Christmas-ish....simply magical!

Hello 6K babies!

Thanks for so many well wishes..I was truly touched to receive sms before and after my flights!(someone sent me at 4 am the day i left!)

Anyway...it was a LONG long flight...first to HK (where i slept most of the way) which took about 3-4 hours or so...and after that...a long 15 hours from HK to Chicago...no personal entertainment system (grumble)...luckily i brought along a PSP and my iPod ... *heh*.

The flight from Chicago to Denver was delayed due to bad weather (at other places) that delayed the plane...luckily the airport in chicago got a nice food court...so had a nice hot meal...then just PSP again...

ok...i just had breakfast...and i am a little jet lagged (cos didn't sleep much in hotel)...

Went to watch Mr. Bean's holiday after school on thursday... it is seriously very very funny. NOW you see them, now you don't - soldiers' uniforms that change colour to blend with the surroundings. What's more, they are designed by teenagers.

Hwa Chong Institution student Liew Mei Hui, 17, and Raffles Junior College's Foo Ming Qing, 18, had spent their year-end school holidays last year experimenting with 'electrochromic material'' that changes colour when an electric current is applied.

Their project was one of 44 done last year under the Young Defence Scientists Programme (YDSP), a joint effort between the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and DSO National Laboratories (DSO).

The two science students had read up about the technology and were mentored by defence scientists from defence research house Temasek Laboratories, as well as DSTA and DSO.

The duo readily admitted that the colour-changing material, ideal for camouflage, is still a work-in-progress. The material lasts about two weeks before it disintegrates.

'We hope to find ways to incorporate the electrochromic material into fabrics and make it tougher,' said Ming Qing.

Budding scientists from 11 schools showcased their works yesterday at the YDSP Congress at Raffles City Convention Centre.

Among them was a 'rail gun', developed by a team of five students from four schools, that uses electromagnetic energy to propel peanut-size projectiles.

At the event, Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean gave out 30 YDSP scholarships to students from various schools. Worth $500 for the first year, students receive another $500 in the second year if they continue to perform well academically.

Forty-five students also won YDSP academic awards, each worth $200, for topping their schools in physics and maths.

Speaking at the event, Mr Teo said the Singapore Armed Forces' ability to customise technology for its defence gives it the decisive edge.

I have no idea about the class outing... until like... yesterday. Who's going? And no... I haven't start mugging ><; Still trying to get Huang Cheng out of my system.

Relative Velocity: Crosswind Flight

Remember the projectile enrichment tutorial Mr Koh gave us, the one where we were asked to read up on relative velocity? You would have noticed the part in the textbook regarding winds blowing aircraft off-course, and the pilot having to turn into the wind to correct for the drift. So here are 2 videos, to show just how much trouble these nasty winds can cause.

Video 1: Boeing's Crosswind Landing Flight Tests (B777-200, B747SP, B777-300) The jets here are being tested to see how they respond to landing with severe crosswinds (the winds are 60 knots, gusting to 70), so no passengers.

Video 2: A JAL flight landing in the now closed Hong Kong Kai Tak airport, with a crosswind gusting across the runway, with passengers.

The approach to Kai Tak is a very strange one, because of the mountains around the airport, the pilots have to manually turn the plane to line up with runway 13. Normally, the pilots can simply tune the radios to receive the appropriate signals and the plane will line up with the runway right in front of them. The radios provide vertical navigation too to guide the planes down safely. But for Kai Tak, there is no runway in sight. Instead, there is a red and white checkerboard where the runway is supposed to be. The captain hand flies the plane in, turning using the approach lights mounted on the ground as a reference. This is called the IGS or checkerboard approach, so no Autopilot can do this. This is why you see the flight in the video turn suddenly, it is not a case of pilot forgetting to read his instruments. By the way, winds around mountains are generally strong very turbulent and unfortunately, not really predictable.. and they have caused a few problems to flight crews.

just upgraded my com to vista, hence the delay in fixing the template. few issues i must mention:

1. Archives are on the exits page

2. Either post your blog links on the tagboard or pass them to me in school so i can put them in the exits page. if you know how you can directly add the html in yourself but DONT SCREW ANYTHING UP OR ELSE

3. read the first post of the tagboard for instructions on it

4. help me think of something to write in the about page

5. the reason why the links are in the white space is because they are non transparent jpgs, and must be on a white background. as soon as i install my flash software ill change them to transparent gifs and shift the links up onto the picture, leaving more space for the text

6. for the first time everyones picture is in, though i think boyang got decapitated to make room for the text, and no one takes nice photos of me so im stuck in the background of huangpeis photo.zzz.

haha... haven blog on the class blog in quite a while... ya, a few updates for this week... Cross-country was fun..... stupid anne and xiuyi caused me to trip and fall.... my wrist still hurts =(...... As for cny celebrations, i think our class did quite well, despite making a 2 digit loss..... at least we had fun, tried our best and learnt some new stuff.... a day in the life of an ice kachang maker.... haha.... but sadly, i didnt get to taste my own ice kachang -.-"... and fac dance.... well, i think artemis did quite well... despite the slight shrinkage in crowd size.... haha..... totally couldnt do the open, kick, twist part thingy...

Ok checked back just now and BOOM! the template is SO much faster for some unknown reason. But the small area given to the actual text looks really weird. And yea! The links are missing! But i didn't even realise it previously haha so maybe it's not a significant problem. Huang Pei has volunteered to add the tag board so maybe the changes can be made together?

Anyway, I "StumbleUpon" the dolphin game. It's an extension for Mozilla Firefox. It takes you to interesting websites according to your preferences. Super good for random surfing!

Some feedback: is it possible to make the textbox (or whatever you call it) bigger? And where are the links that used to be at the sides? .i.e History. I feel the layout is too... crowded and make it difficult to read. (make the pictures less bright so they won't compete for attention?

Did some stuff to the CNY banner. Currently it is only chalked outline. Apparently my agaration not very good.. and now I don't see how I can possibly fit 18 pigs onto the banner. So yes, I will probably only be drawing 5 pigs on the banner. (will upload the WIP later) Is going to paint on Monday perhaps. Suggestions to the colours are welcomed and if anyone has paint at home please bring ^^

Hi! Probably one of the first to look at the new template. My first impression is that the text part is awfully small. Maybe it's just because of its proportion on my monitor. But the worse thing is that I haven't actually seen the entire background! It's too slow loading. Maybe the size (not the dimensions size, but the size size) can be reduced? It's probably pretty huge now. Just some suggestions.

Dramafeste Results

Dramafeste is over. And we have both good news and bad news. The good news is that, Artemis is now leading in the Fac Point thing (we have 130), and according to Chen Xian, since the start of the Fac Shield competition don't know how many years ago, we have never gone past 3rd. The not so good news is that we didn't do as well as we would like to. We got Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (or rather, best supporting dance group which has both guys and girls) and 2nd best play. Was quite disappointed with the tech people, since they changed the light settings without informing any of us, so basically the light controller (me) ran out of fingers to activate the needed controls to their proper brightness settings.

Anyway, for those who came down to support us, with or without tickets, thank you for encouraging us and cheering us on. And for those of you who didn't, you missed a great show, as anyone would agree that we had the best audience response and left the greatest impact on the audience. I will try to get a copy of the video recording if there is one, so just hang on.

O.o, so i figured that i'll at least blog once be4 the results release..yeah. haha this is my style man..just a whole chunk of text, typo and trash in my mind you might find interesting. ok..haha yeah today was BAD ,very very bad... the very thought of today just makes my sad...no la... maybe a bit sian and ok i'll stick to sad...anyway.. the day started with my ass waking me up..yeah it still hurts alright...never play chapteh barefooted....trust me i noe. then had to hobble here and there up and down the stairs to get ready then went off...an adventure just to get to the bus-stop..haha urm then finally got on the bus and haha KARMA! found a seat to rest my sore ass... but then this old lady, ok not so old...gave me a you-dun-deserve-this-freaking-seat-give-it-to-me look as i watched on closely helpless... somehow my ass was staying put... so i sat there till reach sch. (hmm... irrelevent stuff just makes blogging fun...dun moderate!) then i play rubix cube in the bus the pple all stare like seeing some nuclear proliferation whatever thing unfold...wah...oOooo...yeah so funny.. then i turn and turn so pai seh..only two layer..haha save by the school...hurry keep then alight =) anyway..go school alr then as usual went to do pull ups yeah...walao my friends keep maiking me laugh then cannot do properly...haha then flag raising (O.o the relevent part begins) sing the anthem and pledge tthen Mr. Lee came walk down as usual..haha then he inspect our collar i think whether got the pin anot.. the usual suspects apparently wore it today...haha wasted trip O.o..Oh my hair... then return to class bench like so wierd everyone say wah ur hair...did u cut? urm..oooo haha so fuunny hair only mah... anyway so long alr..sian later be come like monkey...haha then as i hobbled ard went to physics lecture..this is where all the crappyness of the day begins yeah... so freaking boring and i dunno...i like the tutorials better haha more fun...cos not much of a comparison actually.. haha.. all i remember was the lecturer trying to give away 10 dollars to two students then i gave up trying to stay awake and slept... i figured my short attention span could be better used in the other lessons haha... then luckily end of lesson someone wake me up. wah so refreashing and awake...wah then so nice my class peeps walk at hobbling speed to company me! thanks pple...yeah appreciated. then was the break... wanted to eat then dunno then comtemplate so long.. then decide to go canteen to see if got pple to eat wif... wah got CT rep and yong lin(sry if spell wrongly).. then went to eat xiao mimi but eat half way they all zhao and left me alone there...walao... deduct ur karma points man...tsk tsk.. nvm la...haha joking.. anyway, the crapiness continued in chem tutorial as i nvr do my chem tutorial...feel like wasted a day man...everybody did leh...walao... sad..sucks...sian apart from that laughed with my table abt thw in class hypotheticl thing...hmm... anyway after that had urm... bio i think lab ya correct then nvr do the tutorial also...the dunno anything abt lipids so the mind map i drew was so retardedly wrong that...sian so stupid.. had to present then walao... dun say alr la... haha then lucky tutorial only fgo thru MCQ otherwise anther lesson feeling sad. Afterthat got prac work... i nvr do bio prac be4 lor.. .then everything also dunno... dunno how to label, dunno must use stringe this that walao so confusing and saddening... anyway then broke a test-tube OMG lik ethat also can... the stupid testube holder no workinh man... haha nvm... experience. after this was chinese O.o anyway the teacher spend like all the time tokinh abt something i wasnot listening to and in then end i just left the classrm not a single thing learnt. so sad. crap man. then luch was fine at the high sch canteen wif my chi class fri as i suppose all our class peeps all eaten le... tehn had econs. ok.. i slept and laugh when i was awake. outcome... nothing learnt as well...crap again. then lesson end just left for canoeing... at macrichie do weights until hands wanna break abs wanna explode alr somemore friends keep jokinf then laugh alr abs like ouch man.. haha..after that guess wad.. i figured that karma can help me improve my days so i went to buy stuff for the class! mashmellows hope you all like. tmr will throw into angel mortel box free for all! haha.. so much for a crap day. 2 lessons not prepared 2 lessons sleep 1 lesson nvr listen= crapy day in sch. so today i make resolution to not hav anymore worse days ahead. actually cant really get much worse unless got like a CS marathon or kena cane or something haha anyway trying to vchoing the stuff but instead came to blog...so much for feeling sad...haha kk must go and try.. hmmm... alr quite a mouth full le this entry...if you manage to faithfully read until here then gg ur eyes gonna close alr..haha.

Hello class, this is your class aviation freak. Ever wondered how it feels like to be driving behind a 747 as it starts its takeoff? How would you interpret the following data: Each engine produces 58K pounds of thrust at takeoff setting, and the 747-400 has got 4 of them.

Here, Mythbusters (I think it is a programme by the BBC, not sure about it) worked with Virgin Atlantic to give us an idea just what these numbers mean.

Ok. If you haven't realised, they only used the 2 inboard engines (2 and 3) so you can imagine the effects if all 4 were running. Would anyone like to calculate the force the 2 cars experienced? I think the fact that the exhaust spreads out should be considered as well, but I have no idea how much the spread is.

Regarding the template for the blog, currently I am passing the photos I took of everyone since day one (of half the class) to yesterday to Zong Ying and I 'think' he will be doing a collage of some kind. Is everyone fine with that? (alternatively I can, after the CNY banner is done, do something else) Would you all prefer a photo collage of the class or a random nice picture/photo for the layout? (Was wondering if you all want to spend some time to think of a nice class logo/mascot) Hopefully there will be time over the weekend to chalk out the design for the banner... :p

STP Blog/Forum

With regards to the STP Blog/Forum, we have 2 options.

1. Set up an LJ community for everyone to post their questions/interesting findings, as well as upload pictures and videos (as requested by the teachers).
2. Create an online discussion forum or board somewhere.

Now we are left to make the final decision as 7E voted for the LJ option while 6H wanted discussion forum. So please let me know which option you people prefer. Offer any suggestions you may have.
